“SHE EXISTS” PROGRAM ADVANCES GENDER EQUITY AND EMPOWERS FEMALE JOURNALISTS IN MAIDUGURI, BORNO STATE WITH SUPPORT FROM THE U.S. EMBASSY ABUJA
The SHE EXISTS program, aimed at promoting gender equity and equal opportunities for women in media, reached another significant milestone as it unfolded in Maiduguri, Borno State. This program is part of the broader initiative that spans all six states of the North East region of Nigeria. It is organized by the Organization for Innovation and Sustainable Development, OISD with support from the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy.
Held at the American Space, situated within the Ramat Library at the University of Maiduguri, the event drew together a diverse and dedicated group of individuals who are committed to transforming the media landscape in Nigeria.
Distinguished speakers graced the occasion, including the Senior Information Specialist of the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy in Abuja, who shared insights into the significance of gender-sensitive reporting in media. The program received an exceptional speech by Mr. Jamilu Yusuf, the Executive Director of the Organization for Innovation and Sustainable Development (OISD), highlighting the importance of empowering women in media.
The core objective of SHE EXISTS is to provide female journalists with the essential tools and knowledge to excel in the ever-evolving media landscape. Participants were immersed in an intensive training program that covered a wide range of topics, such as Advanced Reporting Techniques, Gender-Sensitive Reporting, Reporting Women in Violent Conflict Situations, and Equity and Equality, among others.
The training presentations were spearheaded by the Program Manager of OISD, Ernest Ogezi, alongside a team of highly qualified media experts. The curriculum was meticulously designed to equip participants with the skills and expertise necessary to drive meaningful change in the industry.
This milestone event in Maiduguri follows successful training sessions in Adamawa, Taraba, and Gombe, where a total of 40 female journalists have benefited from the program. The SHE EXISTS program is well on its way to reaching its goal of impacting the North East region, ultimately reshaping the media landscape to be more inclusive and equitable.
The training in Maiduguri was met with enthusiasm and dedication from participants and organizers alike. The success of the program is a testament to the collective commitment to empowering women in media and ensuring their voices are heard.
