Hajia Fatima expressed gratitude for the visit and assured the group of her full support, emphasizing the importance of women's representation in governance.
The Legislative Advocacy Committee is one of the six strategic committees inaugurated by Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen Speaker of the House of Representatives to serve as a mobilisation advocacy engine to ensure the Reserved Seats for Women Bill succeeds.
The Reserved Seats for Women Bill seeks to amend the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to create additional seats for women in the National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly. The bill if passed will address the low representation of women in Legislative Houses by providing for special constituencies to be contested and filled by women as a temporary measure to increase women’s political representation.
The bill proposes to add one extra Senate seat per state and the FCT making a total of 37 additional reserved Senate seats. For the House of Representatives, the bill proposes to add one extra seat per state and the FCT totalling 37 additional reserved House seats and for each State House of Assembly the bill proposes to add three reserved seats one per senatorial district.
